FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions about  Authentic Dog Photography in Alaska

As a professional dog photographer in Alaska  based in Wasilla and serving Palmer, Anchorage, Eagle River, and surrounding communities, I specialize in authentic, nature-driven dog photography rooted in the wild beauty of this state.

Below are the most common questions about working with an Alaska dog photographer and beginning your Journey.

What makes The Journey different from other Alaska dog photographers?

Authenticity. Every image you see is a real dog, in a real place, at a real moment in time. I do not create artificial scenes or AI-generated images. I believe your dog’s real expressions, their aging muzzle, their personality — that’s what matters. Wind in their fur. Water at their paws. Light in their eyes.  My role is simply to recognize it and preserve it with care. Learn more about my dog photography and explore images I’ve captured

What happens during a dog photography session in Alaska?

We go at your dog’s pace. I begin by allowing your dog to acclimate — no rush, no pressure. They explore, sniff, and settle into their surroundings, whether that’s tall summer grass, fresh snow, or a quiet creek bed. Once your dog feels comfortable, I begin capturing their natural expressions and the connection you share. My approach is calm, patient, and responsive.

Do you photograph senior dogs or end-of-life sessions?

Yes. Senior dogs hold a very special place in my heart. There is something sacred about silvered fur and steady devotion. Senior sessions are unhurried and reverent. We move slowly. We pause often. We honor their pace. I also offer Celebration of Life Sessions for dogs nearing the end of their journey. These sessions are tender and powerful — created to honor a lifetime of loyalty, love, and shared history. Whether in your home or at a place woven into your story, these sessions preserve dignity, connection, and the quiet depth that only time can shape. What if my dog isn’t trained, is shy, or reactive? Can you still photograph them?

Absolutely. Many of the dogs I photograph come with unique personalities and stories. Some are shy. Some are spirited. Some simply need space. I choose locations that allow room to breathe and work with calm confidence. I make sessions engaging and fun, using techniques to capture your dog’s attention naturally — preserving the expressions you love most. Your dog’s comfort is always the priority.  I have extensive experience working alongside professional trainers and using positive reinforcement-based handling — you can read more about that on my About page.

Does my dog need to stay on a leash during the session?

Yes — most dogs remain on leash for safety. Alaska’s landscapes are breathtaking but expansive. Your dog’s safety is always my top priority. Leashes are professionally removed during post-processing so your final images look seamless and timeless. You’ll never know it was there — except for the peace of mind it provided.

How many pets can I bring to the photo session?

All pets from the same household are welcome, as long as they can be safely and comfortably managed during the session. Whether you’re bringing one dog or several, we’ll move at a pace that keeps everyone calm, safe, and happy — ensuring each pet has their moment to shine.

Where do dog photography sessions take place?

As an pet photographer in Alaska, I use the natural beauty of this state as part of the story. Sessions may take place in open fields, forest trails, along scenic rivers, in fresh snow, or other wild spaces. I also photograph in the comfort of your home, and studio options are available for those who prefer a controlled, classic portrait setting.. Your dog’s comfort — and the story you want to preserve — guide the location choice.

How do I prepare for the shoot and what should I bring?

A little preparation goes a long way. Light grooming before your session helps your dog look their best — brushing their coat, wiping eyes, and tidying fur if needed. Please bring your dog’s favorite treats and a favorite toy. Treats help with focus and reward. Toys bring out personality and expression. Familiar items help your dog feel confident and comfortable.

Can I be in the photos with my dog?

Absolutely. The connection between you and your dog is often the heart of the image. I encourage you to walk together, play, laugh, and simply be present. Those genuine moments become the photographs people treasure most.

How long does a typical photo shoot last?

Every Journey unfolds a little differently. Depending on the location, your dog’s comfort level, how quickly they settle in, and how many dogs are participating, sessions typically last 45 to 90 minutes. This allows time for variety without overwhelming your dog. Senior sessions may be shorter depending on energy levels — we always adjust to what your dog needs.

What if the weather is bad and I need to reschedule?

As an outdoor portrait photographer in Alaska, I come prepared for changing weather. However, some conditions simply aren’t conducive to beautiful portraits. If weather becomes unsafe or visually distracting, I am always willing to reschedule to ensure the best possible experience and final images.

How are the final images edited?

Each image is edited with meticulous care and the highest quality standards. I refine light, color, and texture. I remove distractions such as leashes or small background elements. I preserve the authentic look and feel of your dog. These are not quick filters — they are carefully refined, high-quality edits that honor the moment, the environment, and your dog’s true presence.

How many images do I receive?

Most Journeys include 10–20 fully edited, high-resolution images, depending on the session selected. You will also have the option to purchase additional images or upgrade your collection if more moments speak to you. Because sometimes choosing is the hardest part.

Do you offer professional prints and wall art?

Yes — and I love when photographs leave the digital world. I offer professional-grade prints, canvases, albums, and custom wall art so your images become cherished pieces displayed in your home — not just files on a screen. Images like these deserve to be seen.

Do you offer themed dog photography sessions?

Yes. In addition to nature-driven portraits, I offer themed dog photography sessions for birthdays, litter announcements, title or ribbon wins, milestone celebrations, and creative concepts you’d love to see brought to life. These sessions are thoughtfully styled while still preserving your dog’s authentic personality. Whether playful, elegant, or imaginative, the focus remains on creating meaningful, high-quality portraits with intention. If you have a vision, I’d love to help bring it to life.

Do you photograph dog events or competitions in Alaska?

Yes. As an Alaska dog photographer, I also provide dog event photography for hunt trials, agility competitions, performance events, and other dog-related gatherings. Event photography requires timing, awareness, and precision. I focus on capturing peak movement, intensity, teamwork, and the defining moments that matter — from focused runs to hard-earned ribbons. If you’re hosting or participating in a dog event in Wasilla, Palmer, Anchorage, or surrounding Alaska communities, I’m available to document it with professionalism and care.

How do I book my Alaska dog photography session?
